한국은 한국의 국제 이미지를 향상시킬 수 있는 방법을 모색하기 위하여 국가 브랜드에 대한 대통령 자문위원회를 설립했다고 국제 언론이 최근에 발표했습니다. 아시아의 국제동물복지재단(AAF), 은 세계의 눈으로 본 한국의 이미지를 향상시키는 한 방법으로 한국에서 개고기와 고양이 고기를 먹는 것을 폐지해 줄 것을 요구하는 바입니다. 거의 전 세계를 통하여, 집에서 기르는 개나 고양이는 식용 동물이 아니라 반려동물로 취급되고 있습니다. 개와 고양이를 먹는 것은 아시아의 일부 국가에서만 널리 행해지고 있습니다. 사회에 대한 개와 고양이의 가치는 전 아시아에서 인정되고 있으며, 필리핀, 홍콩 그리고 대만을 포함하는 몇몇 지역은 최근 몇 년 사이에 개와 고양이 먹는 것을 금지하는 법을 제정했습니다. 식용을 위한 개와 고양이의 생산, 운반 그리고 도살은 관련 동물의 복지를 심각하게 해치는 방법이 사용됩니다. 이 동물들은 집중적 혹은 세미-집중적인 생산에 적합하지 않으며, 인도적 도살 방법도 개발되지 않았습니다. 그 위에, 생산, 운반 그리고 도살에 사용되고 있는 방법은 질병 확산의 위험을 높이며, 그 산업에 종사하는 사람들이 있는 곳을 위험에 처하게 합니다. 최근에 아시아에서 일어난 광우병과 콜레라 환자들은 개고기 준비 및 소비와 관련되어 있습니다. 세계인들이 보는 바로는, 개와 고양이 도살 및 소비는 한국의 중요한 이슈입니다. 그러한 행위는 전 세계적으로 한국의 명성을 손상시키고, 많은 한국인들과 우리를 포함한 국제 복지 단체들은 그 행위가 금지되도록 캠페인을 하고 있고, 또 이 목적으로 그들의 후원자들에게 정보를 보급하고 정기적으로 한국 관계자들에게 로비를 하고 있습니다. 저희들은 한국의 개고기 및 고양이 고기 소비에 대한 전국적인 금지는 국가 브랜드에 대한 대통령자문위원회의 목표를 향한 괄목할만한 성장을 나타내는 것이며, 다시 말해서 한국의 국제적 이미지가 향상될 것입니다. 국내 및 국제 복지 단체들은 그러한 금지 조치를 환영할 것이고, 이러한 조치를 취한데 대하여 자문위원회와 한국 관계자들을 축하할 것입니다. 이것이 받게 될 평판을 볼 수 있게 되고 전 세계적으로 환영 받을 것입니다. 귀하의 조사결과에 이 충고를 포함시켜 주실 것을 간곡히 청합니다. 마크 존스, 아시아동물기금재단(AAF)

CONSUMPTION OF DOG AND CAT MEAT IN KOREA
It was recently announced in the international press that the government of the Republic of Korea has established a Presidential Council on National Branding, in order to investigate how the nation's international image can be improved. As an Asia-based international animal welfare
organisation, Animals Asia Foundation would like to call for the abolition of dog and cat eating in
the Republic of Korea as a means of improving Korea's image in the eyes of the world.
Throughout most of the world, domestic dogs and cats are considered as companion animals, not
food animals. Dog and cat eating is only widely practiced in a few countries in Asia. The value of
dogs and cats to society is increasingly recognised thoughout Asia, and several jurisdictions,
including the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, have enacted bans on dog and cat eating in
recent years.
The production, transport, and slaughter of dogs and cats for food involves methods that severely
compromise the welfare of the animals concerned. These species do not lend themselves to
intensive or semi-intensive production, and no humane slaughter methods have been developed.
In addition, the production, transport, and slaughter methods that are used, increase the risk of
spread of disease, and place at risk those people involved in the industry. Recent human cases of
rabies and cholera in Asia have been linked to the preparation and consumption of dog meat.
In the eyes of the world, the slaughter and consumption of dogs and cats is a major issue in Korea.
Such practices damage Korea's reputation worldwide, and many local Korean and international
welfare groups, including ourselves, campaign for the practice to be banned, and to this end
distribute information to their supporters and lobby Korean officials on a regular basis.
We firmly believe that a nationwide ban on the consumption of dogs and cats in Korea would
represent a major step towards the goal of the Presidential Council on National Branding, namely
the improvement in Korea's international image. Local and international welfare groups would
welcome such a ban, and would congratulate the Council and the Korean authorities for taking this
step. The publicity that this would receive would be seen and welcomed worldwide. We urge you to
include this recommendation in your findings. |
